📖Definition: A statistical measure of the dispersion of returns for a given security or market index; often quantified by the standard deviation or variance of returns.
📊Why it matters: Volatility indicates the risk and uncertainty in the market—high volatility can mean large price swings, which might present opportunities as well as risks. It’s also a key input for option pricing, portfolio risk management, and investor sentiment analysis
💡Example: If stock ABC normally moves by ±1% a day, but suddenly starts moving by ±5% a day, its volatility has increased—options on ABC will cost more, and investors may demand a higher risk premium
