Return on Invested Capital (ROIC)

📖Definition: A profitability metric that measures how efficiently a company generates after-tax operating profit from the capital (debt + equity) invested in the business. It’s typically calculated as:

ROIC = (Net Operating Profit After Tax) ÷ (Debt + Equity invested in the business).

📊Why it matters: ROIC lets investors see if a company is creating real value. If a firm’s ROIC is consistently higher than its cost of capital (what it pays for debt and equity), it’s likely compounding shareholder wealth. If ROIC is below the cost of capital, growth can actually destroy value, even if revenue is rising

💡Example: A company earns $50M in net operating profit after tax and has $300M total invested capital (debt + equity).
ROIC = 50 ÷ 300 = 16.7%.

If its overall cost of capital is 10%, that 16.7% ROIC means it’s generating solid value on every dollar invested
