Return on Invested Capital (ROIC)
📖Definition: A profitability metric that measures how efficiently a company generates profit from the capital invested in the business. It’s typically calculated as Net Operating Profit After Tax (NOPAT) ÷ Invested Capital
📊Why it matters: ROIC shows whether a company is creating value above its cost of capital. A business consistently earning ROIC higher than its cost of capital is usually compounding shareholder value; a low or declining ROIC can be a warning sign even if earnings are growing.
💡Example: If a company has $50M in NOPAT and $400M of invested capital, its ROIC is 12.5%. If its weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is 8%, it’s generating about 4.5 percentage points of value above its financing cost—attractive to long-term investors
