Interest Coverage Ratio
📖Definition: A measure of how easily a company can pay the interest on its debt, usually calculated as EBIT ÷ Interest Expense. It shows how many times operating profit covers interest payments
📊Why it matters: Lenders and investors watch this to gauge financial risk. A low ratio means the company could struggle if profits dip or rates rise; a higher ratio suggests more breathing room and a stronger ability to handle debt.
💡Example: If a company has EBIT of $40M and annual interest expense of $10M, its interest coverage ratio is 4x. That means current operating profit covers interest four times over—generally comfortable, but if profits fell 50%, that cushion would shrink fast
