Enterprise Value (EV)

📖Definition: The total value of a company’s operating business. It’s calculated as Market Cap + Total Debt – Cash & Cash Equivalents. EV represents what it would roughly cost to buy the entire business and take on its debt, minus the cash you’d get

📊Why it matters: EV gives investors and acquirers a more complete picture than market cap alone because it accounts for how a company is financed (debt vs. cash). It’s the starting point for key valuation multiples like EV/EBITDA and EV/Revenue, which are widely used in PE and M&A to compare companies

💡Example: Company A has a $500M market cap, $200M in debt, and $50M in cash. Its EV is $650M ($500M + $200M – $50M). If its EBITDA is $65M, then it trades at 10x EV/EBITDA—investors can compare that to similar companies or past deals to judge if it’s expensive or cheap.
