Return on Capital Employed (ROCE)
📖Definition: A profitability ratio that measures how efficiently a company generates operating profit from all capital in use. ROCE = EBIT ÷ (Total Assets − Current Liabilities)
📊Why it matters: ROCE helps compare businesses with different capital structures and shows whether incremental investment is creating value above the opportunity cost. Consistently high ROCE can signal durable competitive advantages
💡Example: A manufacturer posts EBIT of $120M. Total assets are $1.1B and current liabilities are $300M, so capital employed is $800M. ROCE = 120/800 = 15%. If its weighted average cost of capital is 9%, the 6-point spread indicates value creation
