Free Cash Flow (FCF)
📖Definition: The cash a company generates from its operations after subtracting capital expenditures (money spent on long-term assets like equipment, buildings, or technology). It’s essentially the “leftover” cash that can be used to pay down debt, buy back stock, pay dividends, or reinvest in growth
📊Why it matters: FCF shows how much real cash a business is producing—not just accounting profits. Investors love strong, consistent free cash flow because it means the company has flexibility and resilience, especially during downturns. It’s also a key input in valuation models like discounted cash flow (DCF)
💡Example: A company has $500 million in cash from operations and spends $150 million on new equipment. Its free cash flow is $350 million. Management can use that $350 million to pay dividends, repurchase shares, reduce debt, or fund acquisitions—all without needing to borrow more money.
