EV/EBITDA Multiple

📖Definition: EV/EBITDA (Enterprise Value divided by EBITDA) is a valuation multiple that compares the total value of a company (including debt and minus cash) to the cash earnings it generates from operations before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization

📊Why it matters: Investors and acquirers use EV/EBITDA to compare companies regardless of their capital structure (how much debt vs. equity they use). A lower multiple can suggest a company is cheaper relative to its cash earnings; a higher multiple can signal strong growth expectations or an overvalued asset

💡Example: A HVAC roll-up has an enterprise value of $120M and generates $15M of EBITDA. Its EV/EBITDA is 8x. If similar businesses in the market are trading at 10x, this company might look attractively priced to a private equity buyer—especially if they think they can grow EBITDA post-acquisition

In 1999, the S&P 500 peaked. Then it took 14 years to gradually recover by 2013.

Today? Goldman Sachs sounds crazy forecasting 3% returns for 2024 to 2034.
