Operating Leverage
📖Definition: The degree to which a company uses fixed costs (like salaries, rent, and equipment) instead of variable costs in its operations. High operating leverage means that once fixed costs are covered, each additional dollar of revenue can significantly boost profit
📊Why it matters: Businesses with high operating leverage can see profits surge when sales grow—but also see profits drop sharply when sales fall. Investors watch operating leverage to understand how sensitive earnings are to changes in revenue
💡Example: A software company spends heavily on development and servers (fixed costs), but each extra subscription has very low marginal cost. If revenue rises 10%, operating income might jump 25–30% because most new revenue falls straight to the bottom line. That’s high operating leverage at work
