📖Definition: The degree to which a company’s costs are fixed versus variable; higher operating leverage means profits change more than proportionally with revenue
📊Why it matters: In growth periods, high operating leverage can turbo-charge earnings; in slowdowns, it can magnify losses. Investors watch it to gauge earnings sensitivity to sales.
💡Example: A software firm with $900k fixed costs and $10 variable cost per user sells subscriptions at $20. At 100k users, revenue is $2M and profit is $2M − ($900k + $1M) = $100k. If users rise 10% to 110k, revenue becomes $2.2M while costs rise only to $2.0M, so profit jumps to $200k—up 100%, illustrating high operating leverage
